Distribution O F Heavy Metals in Antarctic Marine Ecosystem
نویسندگان
چکیده
Heavy metal concentrations in Antarctic surface seawaters and some marine organisms were determined, and their distributions and bioaccumulations were discussed in comparison with other marine ecosystems. Locational difference of the heavy metal concentrations in Antarctic seawater was negligible, and their concentrations were in the order of Zn Fe> Mn> Cu>Pb Ni> Cd> Hg. When compared to the western North Pacific, Japan Sea and Bering Sea, the concentrations of Fe, Zn, and Hg in Antarctic seawater were relatively low, which provides evidence that atmospheric transport of these metals from continents, either from natural or anthropogenic sources to the Antarctic water is much less. The Cd level was relatively high compared with those in the western North Pacific and Japan Sea waters, which might be due to the upwelling of Cd-enriched deep waters to the surface. In general, the heavy metal concentrations in Antarctic marine organisms were affected by the metal concentrations in the seawater. Also, it was found that bioaccumulations of metals in Antarctic marine ecosystem were characterized by a high accumulation of Cd and low accumulation of Hg, based on the short food chain with krill as key species, and also by a low accumulation of Fe in fishes as an adaptation to the cold water condition.

Heavy metals distribution and contamination in surface water of the Bay of Bengal coast
In this study, we measured the distribution of heavy metals (Pb, Ni, Fe, Mn, Cd, Cu) in the surface water of Bengal Coast at the southern part of Bangladesh. We also examined the common water quality parameters to discuss the impacts of pollution. It was revealed that the majority of the heavy metals have been introduced into the Bengal marine from the riverine inflows that are also affected by...
متن کاملMarine Invertebrates as Bioindicators of Heavy Metal Pollution
Atmosphere, earth and water compose the environment. The presence of heavy metals in the environment has grown because of their large employment in some industrial and agricultural activities. Although these metals are terrestrial products, they flow into the sea through effluents and sewage or are directly discharged from industries placed on the seawater front. It should be considered that me...
متن کاملDistribution of Heavy Metals Associated with Petroleum in the Northern Persian Gulf: Bushehr and Nayband Bay Area
Parts of oil spills reach Iranian coastline along the Persian Gulf in the form of tar balls and scattered oilpatches. There are many published reports regarding oil spills reaching northern coasts of the Persian Gulf, but none report on the content of heavy metals associated with petroleum in sediments and plants ofcontaminated areas. This research was conducted to determine and map petroleum- r...
متن کاملDistribution pattern of heavy metals in the surficial sediment of Gorgan Bay (South Caspian Sea, Iran)
The Gorgan Bay is an important ecosystem receiving discharge from their tributaries. In this study, concentration of Pb, Zn, Ni, Fe, Al, Cu and As was seasonally determined at 22 sampling points during 2012-2013.Sediment samples were collected using a Van Veen grab. The levels of heavy metals were determined by ICP-AES (Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry) and AAS (Atomic Ab...
متن کاملHeavy metals in coastal sediments of South Caspian Sea: natural or anthropogenic source?
This paper focuses on heavy metal distribution patterns in sediments of central Guilan (CG) and east Mazandaran (EM) in the south Caspian Sea coasts, north of Iran. Sediment sub-samples were retrieved from core and surficial samples in different environments of marine and coastal lagoons as well as coastal outcrops. Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry and Atomic Emission Spectrometry (...
